Culture Minister Lina Mendoni inaugurated the fully restored Archaeological Museum of Limnos and its new and completedly upgraded and contemporary exhibition.
According to a ministry statement, the museum had been damaged in the earthquake of 2014 and was turned over to the residents of Limnos on Saturday.
It is a two-story neoclassical building in Myrina’s neighborhood of Romeikos Gialos, and presents the island’s history from prehistoric times to the Byzantine era. The project was undertaken by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos – to which Limnos belongs administratively – with a total budget of 3 million euros.
The project is part of 17.5 million euros earmarked for the island through the Regional Business Program North Aegean/NSRF 2014-2020 and 2021-2027, the Recovery and Resilience Fund, and national funds from the Ministry of Culture. This is the 28th museum to have been upgraded by the ministry since 2019, the minister said.
Mendoni has been visiting Limnos since Friday, touring among others the prehistoric site of Poliochni, where improvement works took place, the sanctuary of the Kabeirioi, and she signed a contract for a Timeless Archaeological Museum of the island to be housed at the Christodoulideio Mansion, that will operate in parallel with the upgraded Archaeological Museum.
Other works on the island will include restoration work on the Myrina Fortress and the St Demetrios Church in Kontopouli, as well as fire protection works at the ancient site of Kabeirion, already installed but requiring an upgrade of the water network by the eponymous town.
