On January 1st Greece became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council

On January 1st, Greece assumed its role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2025-2026 term. This marks the third time Greece has held a seat on the Security Council, following its previous terms in 1952-1953 and 2005-2006. The election underscores Greece’s commitment to international peace and security, multilateral cooperation, respect for International Law, and its growing influence on international diplomacy.

Greece is a firm advocate of the purpose and fundamental principles enshrined in the UN Charter. As a founding member of the UN with an established democracy, Greece has always supported dialogue and diplomacy based on International Law as the only viable means for achieving the Organization’s main objectives of international peace, security, development and the promotion of human rights.
