The first round of elections for president of the Hellenic Republic concluded on Saturday morning, with Constantine Tassoulas receiving the majority of votes but falling short of the 200 required.
Tassoulas, Parliament president until his nomination by ruling New Democracy, collected 160 votes.
Voting will be repeated on January 31, when 200 votes will again be required of Parliament’s total of 300 seats.
If additional rounds are required, the third one will require a 3/5 parliamentary majority (180 votes). Current indications show a fourth round will be necessary (February 12), requiring an absolute majority (150+1). A total of five voting rounds fare allowed for Parliament president, while all rounds are held at five-day intervals.
The term of current Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou ends on March 13.
