With great success and the participation of distinguished personalities from the fields of science, sustainability, and culture, the 3rd International Forum on Sustainable Development and Culture was organized by the Club of Rome – Hellenic Chapter on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the historic Athens Club.

The highlight of the evening was the presence and honorary recognition of Alexander N. Christakis, PhD, the distinguished Greek-American scientist, Professor of Social Systems Design, graduate of Princeton and Yale Universities, and Founder of the Agora Institute for the 21st Century.
It is a source of profound national pride that, at the inception of the global Club of Rome, Dr. Christakis was among the select group of individuals associated with its formative years and intellectual foundations. His lifelong contribution to systems science and democratic dialogue has earned him international recognition and respect.
In a ceremony marked by both emotion and institutional significance, the Club of Rome – Hellenic Chapter had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Christakis and conferring upon him the title of Honorary Member.
More than a ceremonial distinction, this recognition symbolized a meaningful reconnection between the Hellenic Chapter and the historical roots of the Club of Rome.
During his keynote address, Dr. Christakis captivated the audience with a fascinating historical perspective, sharing unique experiences and personal insights from the formative years of the organization while presenting the principles of his pioneering scientific methodology through practical examples and real-world applications.
Dr. Christakis also referred to his latest book, “The Thread,” offering reflections on the ideas and experiences that have shaped his distinguished career.
The Forum continued with presentations addressing contemporary challenges in sustainability and culture by prominent international speakers, including:
Paul Shrivastava, Co-President of the Club of Rome, who joined virtually from the United States and delivered a message emphasizing the global importance of sustainability initiatives while expressing his support for the activities of the Hellenic Chapter.
Dr. Ioannis Katsoyiannis, Professor of Environmental Technology at the Department of Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Director of the Institute of Sustainable Water Management and Water Law at the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), who presented on the pressing issue of water scarcity, analyzing current challenges and proposing scientific solutions for sustainable water resource management.
Giorgos Chatzinasios, the renowned Greek maestro, composer, and pianist, who spoke about the enduring role of culture in society and the importance of artistic creation in shaping human values.
The event culminated in the presentation of the distinguished “Agni Vlavianou-Arvaniti Awards,” established in memory of the late founder of the Club of Rome – Hellenic Chapter. The awards honor individuals whose outstanding contributions and international impact advance the causes of environmental protection, culture, and sustainable development, while continuing the vision she championed.
The awards were presented to:
Paul Shrivastava, Co-President of the Club of Rome and Professor of Management and Organizations, in recognition of his international leadership and contribution to sustainability research and practice.
Ioannis Katsoyiannis, in recognition of his distinguished scientific achievements, academic excellence, and significant international contribution to environmental protection and the sustainable management of water resources.
Giorgos Chatzinasios, in recognition of his invaluable and longstanding contribution to Greek and international culture through his exceptional artistic work and musical legacy.
The evening concluded with a memorable artistic performance as Maestro Giorgos Chatzinasios took to the piano, filling the historic halls of the Athens Club with his celebrated compositions.
His performance captivated the audience and added a unique cultural dimension to an evening dedicated to science, sustainability, and human creativity.
The event was followed by an official dinner, providing an opportunity for distinguished guests and participants to exchange views on the Forum’s conclusions and discuss future strategic initiatives of the Club of Rome – Hellenic Chapter.
